APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – The Appleton Fire Department is celebrating the success of six members who completed the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) Under Fire training course.
The 40-hour program is run at the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) on the University of Illinois’ campus in Champaign.

According to a Facebook post from the Appleton Fire Department, the training equips firefighters with advanced skills that are critical to operating as members of an RIT and focuses on rescuing firefighters who are downed during life-threatening situations.
The course combines classroom lectures, firefighter fatality case studies and hands-on scenario-based training under live-fire conditions. Among the activities are drags and carries, breaching, heavy lifting and managing firefighter maydays.
The training is supposed to challenge firefighters in both mental and physical manners to prepare them for demanding scenarios.
The participants from the Appleton Fire Department were:
- Battalion Chief Joe Kozikowski
- Captain Jason Lee
- Driver/Engineer Troy Kinley
- Firefighter Cody Peabody
- Firefighter Devin Halbach
- Firefighter Ty Davis
There were other departments as well, including ones from Las Vegas, Orange County, El Paso along with fellow Wisconsinites in Milwaukee and West Allis.
