Amidst power outages and incoming weather, county in northern Wisconsin declares state of emergency

(WFRV) – A county in northern Wisconsin declared a state of emergency ahead of winter weather and ongoing power outages.

Forest County Emergency Management posted on its Facebook page that Forest County Board Chairman Ron Skallerud declared a state of emergency for Forest County. Power outages, impending weather and county-wide road accessibility was listed as reasons for the declaration.

WPS says just over 6,500 customers are out of service throughout Forest County. We Energies says 66 customers are out of service in Forest County.

The US National Weather Service announced that parts of northern Wisconsin could see a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Officials also mentioned that there could be a few thunderstorms late Wednesday morning and that hail could be a threat.

The Crandon School District also announced that schools would be closed for Wednesday, April 2.

The Forest County Health Department reminded residents that warming, food and charging are available at shelters across Forest County. Below is a list of the shelter locations:

  • Crandon Library
  • Argonne Town Hall
  • Hiles Town Hall
  • Wabeno Fire Station
  • Goodman Town Hall

Officials say overnight sheltering is available at the Crandon, Argonne, Hiles and Wabeno sites.
