Jackson Elementary partakes in cereal box collection, domino challenge to support local food pantries

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Jackson Elementary School has hosted a cereal drive for Hunger Heroes Jaguar Den and other local food pantries. On Thursday, students partook in another challenge to promote youth involvement in supporting food pantries.

The Do Good Wisconsin Cereal Box Domino Challenge invites youth and others to promote the Do Good Wisconsin mission of performing philanthropic work across the state and encourage young people to support local food pantries.

School Counselor Tammy Van Ess said the students have collected 845 boxes of cereal, and that it’s not the first year they’ve done the domino activity.

“Last year, we started at different paths, so this year, we decided to do something a little bit different,” Van Ess said. “This year, we’ve made an infinity symbol that spans the whole front of our school.”

All of the classrooms got to come outstide into the hallway and watch as the ‘dominos fell.’ Staff and faculty also ensured that students had fun while creating an educational aspect of the experience too.

“Over the last four weeks, we’ve had some activities like cereal trivia,” Van Ess said. “We did challenges that incorporated literacy skills for students so they could look at the boxes and find words that started with a specific letter or count the calories.”

Schools participating are working to collect the most cereal boxes and create the best ‘domino fall’ video, which will be shared with Do Good Wisconsin in time for March 7, or National Cereal Day.

Winning schools will be honored with a special trophy courtesy of Do Good Wisconsin. Visit Do Good Wisconsin’s website to learn more about their philanthropy and how to get involved.
