Q&A at Menasha Public Library highlights importance of saving Weis Earth Science Museum

MENASHA, Wis. (WFRV) – Community members gathered at the Menasha Public Library on Thursday night for a presentation by Don Mikulic regarding the importance of preserving the Weis Earth Science Museum.

The Weis Earth Science Museum is hoping to stay intact amidst massive changes to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Fox Cities campus, set to close in late June.

Mikulic is a volunteer at the museum, and says it’s unique because not only is it about education, it’s the only one dedicated to geology in the state. It’s also not paid for by taxpayers, so it’s practically relying on its supporters, and its historical significance is critical.

“The museum was built with a little bit of federal money, but state, county and local funding haven’t been contributed,” Mikulic said. “You go through geology, mining history, which are big pieces of our state heritage, and it would be hard to reproduce it elsewhere.”

The Weis serves thousands of students annually, and the shutdown of the Fox Cities Campus could present problems as the Board of Regents owns the building and the museum’s assets.
