Wisconsin DNR urges caution on ice activities after 7 ice-related fatalities reported in 2025

(WFRV) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding snowmobiles and ATV/UTV rides that no ice is completely safe.

According to a press release from the DNR, there have recently been several incidents of recreational vehicles breaking through the ice across the state.

They report that in 2025, six fatal accidents have been reported, with four involving UTVs going through the ice. There was also one snowmobile-related ice fatality.

The DNR highlights that with surgeon spearing season starting this weekend and fishing activities increasing, safety is more important than ever.

The DNR shares the following tips for staying safe on the ice:

  • UTVs are heavy: These vehicles can weigh nearly 3,000 pounds, similar to a car or truck.
  • Have a plan: Be ready for what to do if you go through the ice.
  • Drive Cautiously: Roll your window down and leave the door open while traveling on the ice. Drive slowly, and keep the radio low to listen for any issues.
  • Wear Life Jackets: Ensure everyone in the UTV has a life jacket or flotation device.
  • Know your responsibility: The vehicle owner must recover their UTV or other vehicle if it goes through the ice. After 30 days, fines can be imposed.
  • Be cautious in new areas: Stick to familiar locations with better ice conditions.
  • Check the ice conditions: The DNR does not monitor ice conditions. Local fishing clubs and bait shops can provide current information.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs: Never consume substances before or during your ride.
  • Carry a cell phone: Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
  • Watch for hazards: Be alert for pressure ridges or areas of this ice and open water.
